Guidelines for Lightning Talks
·

When presenting in the Concert Hall, Kraakhuis or Anatomical Theater, the AV team will control the visuals on screen to ensure smooth operations in the room and optimum experience for the online participants. As a presenter, you won’t have control over the computer and you won’t have access to internet, you’ll have a simple device to click next (or go back slide by slide).

Therefore, you should check in with the Slides Preview Room, preferably the day before, and at least 2 breaks before your scheduled presentation and make sure they have the latest version.

To be clear: you cannot present your Lightning Talk from your own laptop!

Preparing your presentation

  • FORMAT

only valid PPT or PPTX files will be accepted

  • ASPECT RATIO

    must be 16:9

Consult Microsoft Help if you need to change it

  • FONTS

    • embed all custom fonts in the PPT or PPTX file

    • and copy the font files in a folder for backup

Consult Microsoft’s advice on embedded fonts when in doubt

  • NO VIDEO’S

don’t use video in a lightning talk

  • CREDITS

make it clear who the authors are and include contact details for further inquiries about your work

How to construct a successful lightning talk

  • Do not use more than 10 slides, ideally aim for 6

  • Make only one point per slide

  • Don’t use too many words on each slide

  • Choose large and clearly legible fonts

  • Keep it simple. Avoid extra detail and never go off on a tangent.

  • Practice frequently not only to improve your delivery but also to ensure you cover each slide in the given time period.

  • Make sure you have time to end your talk properly. Having to rush the end is never nice.

Sharing your presentation

All presentations and related materials can be shared via any platform of your choice, but the conference offers a curated collection at Zenodo for future reference:

https://zenodo.org/uploads/new?community=ipres2024materials

By setting an embargo date, you can share a version of the presentation with the conference team, without releasing it publicly.

Deadline for submission is the 4th of September noon (CEST)

At the conference

Present yourself at the Slides Preview Room (near the Registration Desk) at least 2 breaks before you have to present. Please bring the final presentation on a USB stick if it’s not available on Zenodo.

The AV team will dry-run the presentation together with you and check the technical properties of the files.

Beware it can be busy at times, please come well in time, so we can offer you the best help if needed.

  • FILE NAME

To save time previewing, you’re invited to rename the folder with your presentation files according to this example…

If you are the speaker for the 18th of September at 11h15 in room ‘Kraakhuis’ and it’s the initial version:

    KRAAKHUIS 20240918 1115 LASTNAME FIRSTNAME V1
